Kodiak Area Tribes, Regional Corporations and Village Corporations...
Ever wanted to know the difference between Tribes, Village Corporations, and Regional Corporations? and how KANA plays a part in all of it? (below)I have developed a basic powerpoint that page by page is designed to simplify and explain the basics of it.
This information was put together by myself, if you have any comments, questions or corrections please feel free to contact via e-mail. I do projects like this to get vital information out about our area and culture however I do not pretend to know it all :) Please correct me if you think there is an error in the information I am providing, I will not take offense. Fur Seal Information: *A lot of the fur items you see here are fur seal items- Be aware of what you are purchasing when it comes to different furs, they are not all the same* How is it legal?: Fur seals are covered under the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 meaning it is illegal to "Take" (this includes hunt or obtain the fur of) these animals unless you are Alaska Native. As Alaskan Natives belonging to a Federally recognized Tribe it is legal for my husband and I to hunt, process and create items from animals covered under the marine mammal protection act. Once they are made into the items they are legal to be purchased by anyone, native and nonnative alike. Here is some more information about these wonderful creatures:
Fur seals are known and named for their thick fur, which has 300,000 hairs per square inch. Europeans first named them "sea bears"
Once hunted in large numbers for their luxurious pelts, northern fur seals are now protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act as a depleted species.
The current world population of fur seal is declining, the continued decline is partially believed to be because the fur seal is especially sensitive to changes in their environment.
I have a limited amount of fur seal, my batch was hunted and tanned years ago. Once it is gone I will not be making more of these products from fur seal.
